Mid Century Modern is the key to unlocking the secrets to a successful 1950’s decor. This decade was one of looking to the future, while combining classic styles – put them together, you get the truly unique and revolutionary Fifties style.

In many ways, the Fifties is largely styled on the previous decades’ trends, but incorporating all the latest mod-cons that were then newly available, such as televisions and microwaves.

Home plans changed rather a lot in this decade; sliding glass doors became commonplace, along with screens to separate rooms rather than doors, making the home appear and feel more spacious. Another feature that emerged in Fifties interior design, which gets us at Roller Blinds Direct all excited, was the introduction of floor to ceiling windows – think of the length of the roller blinds!

This was a time of economic prosperity and optimism, thus sparking an interest in purchasing all the newest materials and making the home appear colourful and spacious. As the photographs in this article demonstrate, people were fearless with their use of bold colours in the Fifites, probably to reflect the care-free suburban attitude of the time.

Modern-styled furniture, which is still popular to this very day, became a must-have for the trendy homemakers of the time. Cubist sofas, along with lounge and egg chairs, abounded, as did elaborate table lamps and stylish carpets. This was also the decade in which vinyl and concrete flooring made a serious appearance in many homes for the ease of cleaning, although fabulous carpets were far from a thing of the past.

Now, down to business: what do we recommend in a roller blind to get the ultimate Fifties look? Well, as you may have gathered from the photographs, anything goes in the Fifties, from vivid colours to neutral tones, both of which are available in our Touched by Design range.
